CLASSIFIED POSITION DESCRIPTION

 

POSITION TITLE:       Special Education Paraprofessional

FACILITY:                  Affiliated Buildings-Crow Agency, Fort Smith, Hardin

REPORTS TO:            Building Principal

 

POSITION OVERVIEW: 

The person in this position will assist the special education teacher with the students, individually or in small groups to reinforce and follow up learning activities. They also assist in maintaining neat, orderly, and attractive learning environment.

 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES and RESPONSIBILITIES:

Assist instructional personnel with development and presentation of learning materials and instructional exercises

Assist in presentation of learning materials, instructional exercises, and testing in compliance with the student’s IEP

Assist students individually or in small groups to reinforce and follow up learning activity

Monitor and assist students through drill, practice, and study activities following presentation of instructional concepts by instructional personnel

Assist in supervision of special education students in the classroom, on study trip activities, on the playground, and in bus duty as directed

Listen to students read, read to students, explain words and meanings, rephrase materials, and provide similar learning examples

Assist students in their personal hygiene

Assist in management and shaping of student behavior through use of positive reinforcement strategies

Perform general clerical duties for instructional personnel

Distribute and account for materials such as textbooks, supplies, and equipment; collect, assemble, catalog, and distribute resource materials

Assist in maintaining student discipline

Assist in maintaining neat, orderly, and attractive learning environment, including designing and displaying bulletin boards

Assist in maintaining a variety of reports and records

Assist in scoring tests; compute and record test scores and grades

May assist in parent conferences if requested by instructional personnel

DESIRED MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

EDUCATION / CERTIFICATION:

High school diploma, GED or equivalent

Associates Degree or Paraprofessional Certification

Knowledge of general concepts of child growth, development, and behavior characteristics

Knowledge of public education goals and objectives

Knowledge of arithmetic concepts, English, and language arts

Our Districts have strong academic programs utilizing a variety of techniques for our students. There are programs for special education students and   vocational students. There are a variety of music, drama, art, and sports opportunities for students of all ages. We are a Class A district, pre-kindergarten through 12th grade, with approximately 1,900 students. The student body is 80% Native American.

Community:

Big Horn County, Montana is rich in history, culture and time-honored traditions.  It Includes the Crow and Northern Cheyenne Reservations. Hardin (county seat) is situated on the banks of the Bighorn River and the edge of the Crow Reservation. The town is surrounded by productive farms and ranches. Coal mining has also contributed greatly to the local economy. Hardin, is located 46 miles southeast of Billings (largest city in the State) by way of Interstate 90. The Big Horn County Museum, Little Big Horn Battlefield and Chief Plenty Coups State Park provide interesting and important history of the area. The scenic Big Horn, Pryor and Wolf Mountain ranges are part of the Big Horn County landscape.  Yellowtail Dam offers a majestic view of the water below. The spectacular Big Horn Canyon National Recreation Area is host to water sports.  This area of Big Sky Country also offers fishing, hunting, hiking, snowmobiling, camping, etc. for the outdoor enthusiast.  Annual events in Big Horn County include: Little Big Horn Days, Native Days, PRCA Rodeo & Crow Fair.
